Luke 6:37
Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.

Forgiveness is for you and not the other person. Don’t let anyone hold you in bondage, set yourself free. No you do not have to forget what happen however you must forgive. You can tell the other person you forgive them and GOD or you can just go to GOD and he will be more than happy to hear what you have to say and grant you your request. GOD will take care of you so release it to him. There are things that one has to ask for forgiveness on as well as we are not perfect. Our mind may think of things that are not of GOD, so therefore we have to ask for forgiveness. I say this again set yourself free and enjoy the joy you are to have according to our Father.

You can read in the New Testament on Jesus speaking on the importance of Christians forgiving and/or showing mercy towards others.  Read the Parable of the Prodigal Son which will give you an example of such teaching and practice of forgiveness.

However, here is just a few scriptures on forgiveness, search the bible for more as there are many.  Pray on the word, meditate on the word, and let GOD deliver you from that which is holding you in bondage.

Philippians 1:6
And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns

Colossians 3:13
Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you

Mark 11:25

And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.

Matthew 6:14-16
For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins
