Proverbs 31 “Justice and the Virtuous Woman”

Who can find a Virtuous Woman for her price is far above rubies?

Speak Out for Justice

The words of king Lemuel, the prophecy that his mother taught him.  What, my son? and what, the son of my womb? and what, the son of my vows?  Give not thy strength unto women, nor thy ways to that which destroyeth kings.  It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink: Lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted.

Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, and wine unto those that be of heavy hearts.  Let him drink, and forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more.  Open thy mouth for the dumb in the cause of all such as are appointed to destruction.  Open thy mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and needy.

Hymn to a Good Wife

Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.  The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil.  She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.  She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands.   She is like the merchants’ ships; she bringeth her food from afar.

She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens.  She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard.  She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms.  She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night.

She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff.  She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy.  She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet.  She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple.

Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land.  She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant.  Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.  She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.

She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness.  Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.  Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all.  Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised.  Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.

In this chapter, which is the last chapter of proverbs, it contains 2 poems;

  • Verse 2-9, the wise king
  • Verse 10-31, the virtuous wife

Here in verse 1, Lemuel means unto GOD.  The questions that are asked in verse 2 makes the person listen carefully.  As it is stated in verse 2-9, the godly king is confronted and told that his reign should be characterized by:

  • godliness
  • abstinence
  • consideration

However, verse 8-9 is filled with concise and serious warnings in which kings are particularly vulnerable, corrupt, excessive, and unrighteous and unconcern to those in need.

Now to speak of the noble woman found in verse 10-31.  These poems here offer an outstanding description of that wife, mother, and woman.

There are four characteristics of the Proverbs 31 Woman

  1. She is a committed woman
  • To the Lord
  • To her family

    2.    She is a compassionate woman

  • She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy

    3.    She is a communicative woman

  • She speaks with wisdom and faithful instruction

   4.   She is a competent woman

  • gets up while it is still dark; her lamp does not go out at night
  • works with eager hands
  • provides food for her family
  • considers a field and buys it
  • sees that her trading is profitable
  • makes coverings for her bed
  • watches over the affairs of her household

As stated in Titus Chapter 2:3-5, it tells the older women to teach what is good. Then they can train the younger women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands. Meditate on that for a minute.

This woman is creative. She makes wise use of her time and takes her duties seriously. GOD exceedingly exalts this genuine and loyal woman.

The Proverbs 31 woman gets her identity from serving, obeying, and loving the Lord.

If you are not there yet, and you want to become that Proverbs 31 woman these are some things you may want to start doing today; depend on the LORD, complete the work that he has given you, and enlarge your territory. In order to get started you may want to remove some things, places, and people from you life so that you can become that Proverbs 31 woman.  You need no distraction in becoming this woman.

As this is the last chapter in Proverbs, I want you to reflect on all 31 and get the wisdom that GOD wants you to have.  Don’t be discourage, he is there with you.  The time is now.  Pray, read, and meditate on the word so GOD can help you.

GOD Bless You Much Love Minister Clara Peters
